Implantable Catheter
for Medical Access

Port placement is a minimally invasive surgical procedure where a small, discreet device called a port is implanted beneath the skin. This port is a gateway to your bloodstream, allowing medical professionals to administer medications, draw blood, and perform other treatments without requiring repeated needle sticks. Port placement is commonly recommended for individuals undergoing long-term chemotherapy, frequent blood transfusions, or requiring extended intravenous therapy. It offers convenience, comfort, and improved quality of life during medical treatments.

Possible Reasons for Port Placement:

  • Long-term chemotherapy treatment
  • Frequent blood transfusions
  • Extended intravenous therapy
  • Need for easy access to administer medications and draw blood
  • Improved quality of life during medical treatments

Port Placement for Chemotherapy

Port placement is commonly performed for individuals undergoing long-term chemotherapy. The port provides a reliable access point for administering chemotherapy drugs directly into the bloodstream. This eliminates the need for repeated needle sticks, reducing discomfort and potential complications. The port also allows for blood draws, making it easier to monitor blood counts and adjust treatment accordingly. Port placement improves the overall experience and enhances the quality of life for patients undergoing this vital therapy.

Port Placement for Intravenous Therapy

Port placement is also recommended for individuals requiring extended intravenous therapy. Whether for long-term medication administration, nutritional support, or hydration, the port offers a convenient and reliable access point. With the port in place, medical professionals can easily deliver the necessary fluids and medications without the need for repeated needle sticks. Port placement for intravenous therapy streamlines the treatment process, allowing for a smoother and more efficient experience.

Benefits of Port Placement:

  • Convenient and reliable access for medication administration
  • Reduced need for repeated needle sticks
  • Improved patient comfort during treatments
  • Minimized risk of complications related to venous access
  • Easier blood draws for monitoring and adjustments
  • Enhanced quality of life during medical treatments

What Happens
During Port Placement?

During port placement, you will be positioned on a fluoroscopy table. After administering local anesthesia, the needle puncture site in the appropriate vein will be located, and a wire will be inserted through the needle into the large central vein. A minor surgery is performed, involving a small incision below the clavicle. The port catheter is connected to the port, placed beneath the skin and into the neck vein, and the port is positioned beneath the skin. The incision is closed with self-absorbing sutures that do not require removal.

Port Placement Aftercare Guidelines:

  • Take over-the-counter pain medications as needed for discomfort.
  • Avoid showering for approximately one week after the procedure.
  • When showering after the initial week, cover the wound with plastic wrap until it is fully healed.
  • Refrain from swimming or immersing the wound until complete healing has occurred.
  • Only allow designated healthcare professionals to access the port.
  • Ensure the catheter is flushed with a blood thinner after each use to prevent blockage.
  • Follow up with your healthcare professional for scheduled check-ups and maintenance.
  • Contact your healthcare professional if you experience any concerning symptoms, such as increased pain, redness, or drainage at the incision site.
